There are icons missing in the control panel

Check that all permissions are writable by your webserver, thankfully Joomla! has a tool built into it that is able to check this for you, simply:

System -> System info -> Permissions

Everything should be writable, if they are not use an FTP client or a file management component such as JoomlaXplorer to change the file permissions to writable.
